Our service projects, programs
Our club is involved in a variety of projects and programs that involve community service, fundraising and assisting children locally and worldwide. Below is a current listing:
Day of Play
Each September we coordinate a community "Day of Play" or "Day for Kids" in conjunction with other Kiwanis groups in town and the Boys & Girls Clubs. The event is typically held at the local Boys & Girls Clubs facility at Del Cambre and Calaveras avenues. Youngsters and their families have fun playing and getting snacks.
Make a Difference Day
We join the Town of Fountain Hills in this national event and volunteer for hands-on work in the community to directly benefit those who cannot do the work themselves -- landscaping, cleaning, repairs, painting, whatever needs to be done.
Kiwanis One Day
We join with all the Kiwanis-related groups in town to perform a service project to benefit the community. For the past several years we have partnered to perform maintenance and other improvements at the local Boys & Girls Club as well as other locations such as STARS and the Kiwanis Activity Center.
Extended Hands Food Bank
For several years now we travel to the Fountain Hills facility as a group and help sort food, bag some items and prepared food boxes to be given away. We've given funds to the organization for many years, but we have launched an ongoing tradition of offering hands-on service as well.
Ronald McDonald House
On a regular basis we prepare home-cooked meals to share with families who are staying at one of three Ronald McDonald Houses in the Phoenix area. These families typically have children who are undergoing major medical therapies or surgeries.
Phoenix Rescue Mission
On a regular basis we volunteer to serve lunch to the homeless population at Phoenix Rescue Mission. We don't prepare the food, but we do interact and encourage the homeless as we serve them lunch; typically hundreds are served at each session.
Helen's Hope Chest
We occasionally provide hands-on assistance to this agency in Mesa, which provides a "store" for foster children to come and shop for free -- they are able to pick out clothing, school supplies and other necessities, whatever makes them feel special. We typically help sort clothes or perform other tasks they need done at Helen's Hope Chest.
Save the Family
We provide hands-on service to this organization, which provides low-cost housing for the homeless, domestic violence victims and others. Our last project involved painting and cleaning a two-bedroom apartment so a family could move in and feel welcome and special.
In cooperation with the Town of Fountain Hills, we pick up litter on designated streets in town. This is done 4-5 times a year to maintain a clean appearance in town and help the environment.
Food for Kidz
In cooperation with New Journey Lutheran Church and other organizations, we help pack special dehydrated food kits that are sent out locally and internationally to needy families; tens of thousands of meals are "packed" on an annual basis.
Kiwanis Across the Border
We help purchase clothing, shoes and goodies that are shared with poor residents in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. This is done in cooperation with a Kiwanis club in Nogales, Arizona, right across the border. Each year the program culminates with a big celebration in Mexico in January to give away tons of stuff to families.
Community blood drives
In cooperation with United Blood Services and the Town of Fountain Hills, we coordinate five blood drives each year that bring in hundreds of pints of blood and the resulting saving of hundreds of lives through blood products. We have won many awards due to these popular community blood drives. The Town of Fountain Hills helps sponsor the drives by offering the Community Center at no charge.
Breakfast with Santa
A festive event on the first Saturday of each December that allows hundreds of kids, parents and grandparents to enjoy a breakfast, be entertained by clowns and have a photo taken with the Jolly Old Elf himself.
Part of our mission includes raising monies for donation to causes around the world and in our community. Our two major fundraisers each year are the November Fountain Festival and the February Great Fair, where we set up a cook trailer and offer breakfast and lunch items to giant (and hungry) crowds at the art festivals. Other special events where you can often find us include Oktoberfest, Eggstravaganza egg hunt and Halloween in the Hills.
Per the fundraising mission above, our club typically gives grant monies to the Kiwanis International Foundation (Children's Fun), the Eliminate project, the Kiwanis Southwest District Foundation, Junior Achievement, Boys & Girls Clubs McKee branch, Extended Hands Food Bank, high school scholarships (Golden Eagle Education Foundation) and more to help broaden our impact on helping the children of the world.
